The satisfactory performance and durability of the Ford Bacon & Davis design was the basis of this big FB&D type order. Note these a bit larger than the 1896 order for Canal & Claib. Mahogany interior, birch veneer ceiling, nickel pl. trimmings, H&K walkover seats, Van Dorn drawbars, Sterling registers, 33" wh. These allowed NO&C to begin retiring older cars, the 1-49, 51-70 St. Louis car order. P - S p. 122.
STDR | 230-244 | 20'8" OB | Truck unkn. poss. LB | St. Louis Car Co. | ON 144 | 27 Oct. 00 | 15 cars |
FB&D type. Began arriving May-June 1901, assigned to Jackson line. P not clear enough to identify truck. 1902 census — NO&C operating 122 closed cars, 12 open (wiresides).
STDR | 245-254 | 20'8" OB | Lord Baltimore | American Car Co. | ON 637 | 28 Mar. 06 | 10 cars |
Split order, these for 4'8½" NO&C lines, rest for N. O. Ry. & Lt. Co. (which see p. q). 10 5'2½" cars, 290-299. FB&D design (29'4" OA) width over sills incl. panels 7'7½" + over posts at belt 8'. Sweep of posts 2-5/8". Center post 2'10-3/8". Ht. floor to ceiling 8'7/8", track to underside sills 2'5½", from underside of sills over the trolley board 9'2-1/8;", track to platform step 13¼", step to plate 13¼", side sills 3¾" × 7", end sills 3¾" × 6", thickness car posts 4½", side posts 1¾". Seats 33" lone, aisles 21" wide. Finished in mahogany, ceilings of maple veneer. Folding gates, folding doors.
STDR | 255-259 | 20'8" OB | Lord Baltimore | McGuire-Cumm. | ON —— | 1908 | 5 cars |
Another split order. These 4'8½" for NO&C lines,
rest for N. O. Ry. & Lt. Co., 30 cars 5'2½" 320-349.
Arrival of DT AR 400s from Southern Car Co. for St. Charles-Tulane Belts
(a few were seen on Jackson) released many FB&D for RB - RT beginning
1915. RG for 5'2½" lines. The 255-259 FB&Ds numbers
conflicted with Jackson & Sharp ST DRs but the J&S care were 5'2½",
except for one RG for NO&C service.
Dual gauge situation causes confusion and can be source of errors. NOPSI RG Jackson Line 28 Oct 25, North Claiborne in 1926, and St. Charles-Tulane Belts overnight 1-2 Oct. 29. |
Builder's photo of one of the big 70-car order from American Car Co., ON 299, completing
NO&C's conversion to Ford Bacon & Davis design cars. These hefty
workhorses were 8" longer over-body and over-all than the 1896 American order.

One of the 1899 American Car Co. FB&D cars, from a 1902 brochure
describing the St. Charles and Tulane Belts. Lord Baltimore truck
and original fenders. Passengers entered and exited via the rear
platform; two man operation. — George Friedman collection
Rebuilt FB&D, “fishbelly” style, St. Louis Car Co. 1900, ON 144, Lord Baltimore truck. Such rebuilds began appearing before WW I and the 1918 renumbering. Note Brill semi-convertible in the left background. Its truck seems to have only upper chord and is as yet unidentified. All photos and records of the semis show Brill 39 or 76 types only. Car 241 is at Arabella Station, a wide gauge barn, so it must have been RG from its original standard gauge truck. — George Friedman collection
For another picture of a rebuilt and RG car in this series, see the photo of
car 208 in S, p. 122, showing the car on the Tchoupitoulas line, March 25, 1925.
Standard gauge FB&D from American, 1906, a split order (20 cars)
evenly divided, 10 cars standard gauge, 10 cars 5'2½" for wide gauge
lines. Lord Baltimore truck with anti-gallop rods.

Car 196 is from the 1899 order, ON 299. In this 1920s photo, it is
making its way through congested French Quarter streets on the wide gauge
City Park line, so it has been RG to 5'2½".
