One of the 7-window Brill cars from ON 5777, lettered
“N. O. C. & L. R. [R.]”, i.e., New Orleans City & Lake Railroad,
riding on its original Brill 22-E Maximum Traction trucks.
This is probably the original “as built” appearance of these cars.
Note the notched window sash.
The location is not known, but the tracks suggest that it is at a car barn,
perhaps Esplanade Barn, since the front clerestory displays the route name
Esplanade. On the back of the picture, in contemporary handwriting,
are the names of the people: Conductor Jackson, I. M. Kellogg, I. W. Ford,
John Jacquet, ______ Thomas, J. L. Paine[?], and R. O'Brian (sic).
However, there is no indication of which person is which, except for the “conductor”
(presumably meaning the motorman, since no conductor is in sight). Also,
from another very similar photo, we know that the person at the far right is
Robert “Bob” O'Brien, who came up through the ranks to become in 1914
superintendent of equipment. — George Friedman collection
Sharp detail of a 20' body Brill from ON 5777. Fenders fitted by
Brill, came with cars when delivered. Note interior ads, “Quaker Oats”
are still a staple. Note also “Station Only” sign. Clerestory
sign green tinted glass, for night-time identification. Date circa 1895.
Too bad the people are not identified.

New Orleans City RR had several of these attractive transfer stations,
this one from a 1902 tourist guide. The 111 has its original Brill 22-E
trucks. It was part of the Brill ON 5777 of 1894. Note the boy
gazing at the car — could this be E. Harper Charlton?
— George Friedman collection
Car 202, from Brill ON 5780 of 25 Apr 94, shows two characteristics.
The sash when lowered leaves the arch in position to deny a comfortable place
for the passenger's elbow. And the space between the Brill 22-E trucks
below the car floor is very short. The braking system was manual, so there
is no air compressor or reservoir to go under the floor. Note the flag
advertising sailing at West End. — Earl Hampton collection
