Picture 19.8.

This is an 1878 view of the Clay statue, looking out toward the uptown side of Canal Street.  The base of the statue has acquired a protective fence.  In the far left corner, a horsecar of the Orleans RR is awaiting start time, when it will follow the broad curve that will swing it around the statue into the outer track to begin its return trip.  On the far side of the statue, a horsecar of the City RR is turning around on its turntable, from which it will follow one of the three outbound tracks on which we can see several other horsecars lined up awaiting their start times.  There is a simple starter's house near that turntable; this will be replaced by a more ornate kiosk in the next few years, as seen in the several pictures following.  The Turo building is on our right, and the church steeple is prominent down the block.  Notice the casual use of the roadways, by vehicles going in both directions.
