This is a 1956 view of Canal Street below the end of the streetcar
tracks. We can see one streetcar at the loop terminal, just left of
the center of the picture. The approaches to the Canal St. ferry are
prominent at the right, with plenty of cars lined up to take the trip to
the other side of the Mississippi. The walkway above provided access
to the ferry for pedestrians. Note the ice cream vendor pedalling his
three-wheeled freezer in search of customers. Just behind him is what
appears to be a “woodie” station wagon. The sign projecting from
the walkway reads:
