Masson

The Masson family of France, ancestral to the Smith family of Covington, LA, was traced to John Masson, born in 1670.  This work was initially assembled by Archie R. Smith III and by Suzanne Murcia Eizenberg.  Much of the information was collected by Henry James Masson in April, 1914 from family bibles.  Additional information from wills discovered by Pat Mason Harris.  The siblings of Abraham Masson (I) and (II), and the descendants of Abraham Masson (III), as well as some other branches of this tree, were compiled by myself from ancestry.com records.  My thanks to Pat Mason Harris for some addditions and corrections.

The name Masson can be French, usually spelled in French Maçon, and means the same as the English Mason.  Several Masson families came from England or Scotland.  Some families in the USA have dropped the double-s and now spell the name Mason.

1.   John MASSON, b. c. 1670 in France, d. 10/9/1741 in Philadelphia; m. Mary ______, b. c. 1688, d. 1/4/1749 in Philadelphia.  It is thought that John Masson was Huguenot.  He was a sailmaker.
John's birthplace in France has been variously reported as Alspoon, Alapoon, or Olepoon.  None of those names have been identified, but the name appears to be Flemish.  Researcher Jack R. Mason has suggested that these are misreadings of Oléron, an island off the southwest coast of France, near La Rochelle and not far from Bordeaux, which would have been a good location for a sailmaker.  It was a center of French Huguenot activity.
There are baptismal records for their son Abraham and most of his siblings in the Presbyterian church in Philadelphia, PA, implying that they were born in the Philadelphia area.
John, Mary, and their daughter Eleanor are buried in Christ Church Burial Ground, Philadelphia.  Their original gravestones are illegible, but an adjacent modern marker is inscribed, “In memory of JOHN MASSON native of Olepoon in France late sailmaker in this city who died Oct 9th 1741 Aged 71 years. / Here lieth the body of MARY the wife of John Masson who departed this life the 4th day of January 1749 Aged 61 years. / Also her daughter ELEANOR MASSON who died July 27th 1803 Aged 87 years.”
There is a record of a John Masson arrival in New York 7/6/1723, but this is probably a different John Masson, as the children are known to have been baptized in Philadelphia prior to 1723.
