STDR | 240-259 | 21' OB | Lord Baltimore truck | Jackson & Sharp | ON 1348-1367 | 26 May 1899 | 20 cars |
These cars, intended for Prytania Line, were called “Early
Prytanias”. Replaced 20' & 22' 1893-95 Brills, sending them to
other lines. In 1903, The J&S cars inaugurated service on the
“Royal Blue” Line (officially, the Napoleon). J&S numbered orders
for each car, not for lots as most other car builders. These were
excellent cars, sturdy and reliable, lasting many years. One car RG for
NO&C (standard gauge) lines (see BE roster). Thirteen RN 1918 and RB
like the FB&D — but poss. with straight sides like the 1900 St. Louis Car
Co. order, nos. 260-277. P - S p. 119, cars as delivered.
REN may have been slightly earlier than '18 because the 4'8½" FB&Ds (American '06, nos. 245-254 and McGuire '08 255-259) were RG after the arrival of the DT AR 400s. The first cars starting with 240 were DT trailers from American, ordered 1894 — no conflict. |

Brill 22-E | St. Louis Car Co. | ON 92 | 2 Jan. 1900 | 18 cars |
These cars mis-identified in S. St. Louis Car Co. records
not available until Alan R. Lind's history (HS) publ. 1978. Cars closely
resembled NO&C DTDR from American, ON 120, numbers 71-82 (see p. g),
with narrow waist panels. St. Louis Car Co. records (HS p. 318) indicate
N. O. Traction Co. ordered the cars, but N. O. City RR (2nd corp.) took over
the former in March of 1899. Poss. NOTCo made initial contact for the
order before Jan. 1900, for the 260-277 cars took the place of some Brill 22'
cars removed from their 1895 Brill order. HS notes under truck column
(p. 318) code “ON 5008” (order no.) with name “Moore”, yet the 1900 photo of
264 shows 22-E trucks (P - S p. 125). 260-277 poss. arr. w/o trucks and
were put on 22-E trucks from the company's stock,
for ST had repl. many 22-E trucks under 20' Brills.
Cars RB with waist & rocker panels repl. by straight (not “fishbelly”) steel sheaths on sides, P - S p. 79 car 275 ca. 1917. Poss. all RT with Lord Baltimores or Brill 21-Es. These were, like their Jackson & Sharp brothers, solidly built and rugged cars. They began on the Esplanade Line and so well approved soon had a name: “Esplanade cars”. DP 12/2/00 p. 8 “Eight big cars to start Dec. 3 on Esplanade.” |
