Picture 149.

This view is looking down Royal Street into the Vieux Carré from Canal.  St. Charles Street is behind the photographer.  The traffic policeman, with his primitive traffic signal and an umbrella for shade from the sun, is standing where the center, fifth track would be if it passed here; this is the end of the gap in the center track.  Only a few streetcar lines crossed Canal, notably the Clio and Carondelet lines of the old St. Charles Street RR.  This was their upbound crossing.  Note the jog in the track as it crosses Canal Street. — C.
