No claim is made that this is a complete list of all grandchildren of these two families. Only those grandchildren are listed who were discovered in the SWLR search mentioned above. As far as I know, however, this is a complete list of the children of these two families.
Bona Arcenault, in Histoire et Genealogie des Acadiens, mentions three other children attributed to Joseph LANDRY and Marie MELANÇON. These are discussed at the end of this article.
The criteria for assignment of children and grandchildren of these two families are the following, in the order of importance. No case has been noted in which there is a conflict among these criteria.
Grandparents: The parents of Joseph LANDRY of family #1 are Firmin LANDRY and his first wife, Françoise (or Elizabeth) THIBODEAU. The parents of Joseph LANDRY #2 are Rene LANDRY & Marguerite THERIOT. The parents of Marie Anne MELANÇON (family #1) are Paul MELANÇON & Marie THERIOT. The parents of Marie Rose MELANÇON (family #2) are Jean MELANÇON and Marguerite Osite DUPUIS. (Note that "Pats" and "Mats" are the abbreviations for paternal and maternal grandparents, respectively, in the listings below.)For convenience, I have taken the liberty of numbering the children of these two families in the listings below. I have not numbered the grandchildren. I have also indented the entries to indicate family relationships. (Vol. 6, p. 2532)This appears to be the same person as Marcellite LANDRY, child #2 of family #2. Compare the marriage date and the name and parents of the husband. There is no way that the bride's mother's name can be Marie Anne. At least two of this woman's children have their grandmother's name listed as Marie Rose.
2. JOSEPH LANDRY, 1753, fils de Firmin et de Francoise Thibodeaux, marie vers 1775 a Marie-Anne Melancon. I do not know Arcenault's source for the above information. It appears to come from a succession, and if so, it presumably lists the living children of family #1 at the time of the death of Joseph LANDRY #1 in June 1797.
Differences with my list:
(1) Joseph b. 13 May 1779 is missing. A reasonable guess would be that this child died young, or at least, died before his father.I have not examined Arcenault's work directly. But I am suspicious that this entry is his reconstruction from other data, not a transcription from a succession. In the absence of a check of his sources, in the presence of some clear contradictions between this entry and those in SWLR, and in light of the fact that there are many errors known in Arcenault's work, I am inclined to discount this entry. Therefore, I have no evidence of a Celestin, Marie Melanie, or Onesime in family #1.(2) Lucie appears to be the same person for which SWLR records a baptism of Louis LANDRY. Which name is correct cannot be determined.
(3) Marie Magdeleine b. 29 June 1782 and Rosalie b. 7 Feb. 1784 are missing. They both were still having children long after their father's death in 1797, and there are sufficient entries in SWLR with the mother's name Anne or Marie Anne to be certain that they belong to family #1. However, the birth entries for both of these daughters have the mother's surname garbled, so Arcenault may have missed them.
(4) Celestin b. around 1786 is known nowhere else. There is a Celestin in family #2, b. between 1789 and 1791.
(5) Marie Melanie b. around 1788 appears to be the Marie Melanie dit Marcellote mentioned previously. This is clearly a confusion between the two families.
(6) Onesime b. around 1790 is known nowhere else. He would be 20 years older than the Onesime who is child #10 of family #2.
(7) Doralise, possibly born posthumously, is clearly the same as the Louise whose marriage is recorded in SWLR on 23 Nov. 1813. This is not a problem.
There is also a problem comparing the birth date of Elise with the baptism date of Joseph, the next younger sibling. The two dates are too close.
One possible explanation could be that the birth date listed for Elise is either a typo or a misreading of the original record. Suppose that the correct birth date was 24 Dec. 1798 (a 9 read as a 7 in the year). This would imply that Elise is the same person as Louise or Doralise, child #13 of this family, whose birth record has not been found in SWLR. However, the birth would be too long after the death of Joseph LANDRY #1 for credibility. (Maybe the date should be in 1797? But now, I am just guessing.)
It is also curious that the date of baptism of Elise, 4 Nov. 1805, is also the date of her mother's death. Perhaps the priest was called to attend the dying woman, and discovered an unbaptised child (or young woman, if the quoted birth date is accurate) in the home.
I consider this an unsolved problem. Suggestions, and even better, evidence pointing toward a solution, would be welcome.
