Story

The Story family (also spelled Storey, sometimes Storie) traces back to William Story, who emigrated to Massachusetts from Norwich, Norfolk County, England in 1637.  The family lived in Massachusetts, mostly in Ipswich and in Boston, branching out into New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine.  Some families settled in Manchester, Massachusetts (now known as Manchester-by-the-Sea), from which many made a living on the sea.  James Isaac Story (#1.2.1.3.4c.4a.2a.1) was married in New Jersey in 1782, and his two sons were born there.  His older son Isaac Story, Jr. (VII) (#1.2.1.3.4c.4a.2a.1.1) settled in New Jersey, founding a branch of the family in that state.  Then in 1803, shortly after the Louisiana Purchase, James Isaac's second son Benjamin Story (#1.2.1.3.4c.4a.2a.1.2) moved to New Orleans and established a branch of the family in Louisiana.  In 1788, Andrew Story (#1.2.1.4.5b.1.8) migrated to southeastern Ohio, and founded a branch of the Story family there.

For other, apparently unrelated, branches of the Story family, see Thomas Story (#2), Robert Storie (#3), and Rowland Story (#4), toward the end of this listing.

The Storys in Philadelphia have been particularly difficult to trace.  Outside of the Quaker community, which kept meticulous records that are largely online, Philadelphia birth, marriage, and death records on the Internet are sparse.  At least three more Story families can be traced back no further than c. 1800 Philadelphia: Amos Story (#5), Isaac Story (#6), and Samuel Story (#7).

Most of the records which were compiled into this genealogy were found on ancestry.com.

As an aid to readability, all names appear in bold.

Many given names were used over and over again in these families.  For clarity, I have taken the liberty to number them within each family, somewhat arbitrarily.  These numbers are shown as Roman numerals in parentheses.

  1. Robert Story, b. 1563 at St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England, d. 28 Jul 1604 in London, England; m. 1580 Elizabeth Sargent, b. 30 Jan 1556 at St. James, Courteenhall, Northamptonshire, England, d. 1603 at the same location.

The Story Family in New York, Philadelphia, North Carolina, and Tennessee

Another branch of the Story family, unrelated (as far as is known) to those previously described here, was founded in New York in the 1670s when Robert Storie and his wife Patience Wilson emigrated from London.  From New York, this family moved to Philadelphia, and Robert's grandson – also named Robert Story – moved to Maryland.  His sons moved to North Carolina and Tennessee.

          1. John Story.  Many researchers list John Story, b. 1735, d. after 1756, as a son of Enoch Story (III) and Elizabeth Houlston.  This seems to be incorrect.  For one thing, his birth was 5 years before their marriage.  Another is that he was born, lived, and died in Chesterfield County, Virginia, but his supposed parents and their other children lived in Philadelphia.

The Story Family in Boston, South Carolina, Kentucky, and New York

Another branch of the Story (or Storey) family began with Rowland Story of Heydour, Lincolnshire, England, who emigrated to Boston around 1670.  He is known to have bought land in Boston in 1673.  He and his two wives lived and died in Boston, but his adult children moved to South Carolina.  Some of their grandchildren moved back north to Dutchess County and Queens/Nassau County, New York, and one of their great-grandchildren moved from South Carolina to Kentucky.

  1. Rowland Story (I), b. 1645 at Heydour, Lincolnshire, England, d. 13 May 1709 at Boston, Massachusetts; m. (1) est. 1675 Bethia ______; m. (2) 16 Jul 1680 at Boston Anne Belcher, b. 13 Sep 1665 at Milton, Massachusetts, d. 15 Nov 1707 at Boston.  Rowland's parents are reported to be William Story, b. c. 1620 in England, d. c. 1638 in England, and his wife Sarah Foster, b. 1620 in England, d. 1681 at Ipswich, Massachusetts.  This does not make sense, most especially when comparing William's d. date to Rowland's b. date.

  1. Children of Rowland and Bethia:

    1. Bethiah Story, b. 15 Jul 1677 at Boston, d. 8 Jun 1690 at Boston.

          4. Jesse Story, b. 1792 in SC, d. after 1850.
