Tombstone of Tillie PEISER FRIEDMAN

Tillie PEISER, first wife of Joseph Brenard FRIEDMAN, is buried in Gates of Prayer Canal St. Cemetery in New Orleans, LA.

Her Hebrew name was Toveh.  Her husband's Hebrew name was Yossef.  The Hebrew inscription on the upper part of the face of the tombstone has been partially translated as follows:

Here lies
The dear and righteous Mrs. Toveh,
daughter of Eliezer and wife of
[...] Yossef Friedman
Died [...] on the second of [...]
[...] 5639 [Gregorian 1878]
Her husband and sons will cry for her
May her soul be bound in the bundle of life

The following verse is carved in English near the base of her tombstone:

As the sweet flower that scents the morn
But withers in the rising day
Thus lovely was this infant's dawn.
Thus swiftly fled its life away.

The tombstone is signed “Reynolds” at the lower right.  James Reynolds and his family were prominent in the building arts in 19th century New Orleans.  He was an active stonecutter from 1866 to 1880, with a shop on Poydras Street.  His signature on a Jewish tombstone is unusual.
