Landry

Five separate and, as far as is known, unrelated Landry families migrated to North America.  Two of these are ancestral to our family.  Both migrated from France and settled in Acadia in the middle 1600s, and curiously, both were headed by men named René; they are therefore distinguished from each other as René Landry l'Aîné (the older) and René Landry le Jeune (the younger).

Some authors in the past have asserted that the two René Landrys were half-brothers, sons of a Jean Claude Landry.  The mother of René l'Aîné was listed as unknown, and the mother of René le Jeune was listed as Marie Sallé.  Marie Sallé is known, and is found on Acadian censuses as widow of Jean or Jehan Claude; it was assumed that the census takers omitted his surname, Landry.  However, this entire scheme was based on guesswork.  There is no evidence for it, and it is now discredited.  According to Fr. Clarence J. d'Entremont, Jehan or Jean Claude was a Micmac Indian, and no such person as Jean Claude Landry ever existed.  According to research by Stephen A. White into Catholic Church marriage dispensations, René Landry le Jeune could not have been more closely related to René Landry l'Aîné and his sisters Perrine Landry and Antoinette Landry than cousins in the third degree.

Due to the destruction of records, the origins and parents of neither of these two families is likely ever to be known.  It may be conjectured that they originated in La Chaussée in the Loudun area of Poitou in west central France, because many Acadian families originated there, and because the name Landry is well known there but much rarer elsewhere in France.  However, the conjecture cannot be proven with records now known.

Our family is descended in the direct male line from René Landry le Jeune to Eleda Landry Friedman, and in the female line from Antoinette Landry, sister of René Landry l'Aîné.

A third Landry family was that of Guillaume Landry, son of Mathurin Landry and Damiane Desavin (or Desavis), who migrated from France to Québec in the 1650s.  Guillaume is known to have been born at La Ventrouze-au-Perche, and many Acadian families came from that area.  It is therefore tempting to assume that one or both of the René Landrys came from there.  Again, however, there is no evidence.  As far as is known, our family is not descended from Mathurin or Guillaume.

A fourth migration of a Landry family was that of two sons of Jean Jacques Landry and Susanne Catherine Frasse (or Fraze), Jean Jacques Henry Landry and Charles Henri Landry.  They migrated from Neufchatel, Switzerland, and settled in Louisiana in the 1820s and 1830s, and they have many descendants today in the Lafayette, LA area.  As far as is known, our family is not descended from this Swiss branch of Landrys.

A fifth Landry family migrated to Louisiana in the early 1800s in the person of Alexandre Charles Landry, son of Etienne Nicholas Landry and Marie Adelaide Lepen of St. Sulpice Parish in Paris, France.  Alexandre Charles married Louise Antoinette Peytavin on April 1, 1811 at St. Martin's Church, and they settled in the Opelousas area.  Again, as far as is known, our family is not descended from this branch of Landrys.
